Shop Talk: UW chops it up with Rahiem of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five

Todd Williams aka Rahiem of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five took time out of his busy schedule to speak with Uptown Weekly about his penman work on the @Netflix series The Get Down. I had to wait a few weeks for this interview, because they just put the second half of Season 1 in the can. When we caught up, he was gracious enough to give us a brief Hip Hop history lesson of actual events that shaped the series. I am humbled that the Hip Hop pioneer found me worthy to drop jewels on. We talk about the challenges that took place getting the younger generation to understand the cadence in the early rhymes, to his introduction to Flash, to talking about the difficulties in forming a reunion with old members because of differences. It’s a really dope interview and I’m not just saying it because it’s my blog. My favorite part was talking about Keith “Cowboy” Wiggins. Being a party rocker myself, I used to always pause when Flash paused while talking about Cowboy (RIP) because I knew how much he meant to him and what he contributed to this culture. Rahiem really gave his compadre his props. But by all means,  Rahiem has his own story, and I’m glad he’s finally able to tell it.

Please click the link below. The interview is 45 minutes, but if you love Hip Hop history like I do, it will be the best 45 minutes of your day. Please pass these stories on to your children, because these stories aren’t written down in the history books. These stories are coming straight out of the mouths of the legends…
